About Us
Benefits of Working for DME
Safety and Health is committed to maintaining Queensland’s reputation as having
one of the world’s safest mining industries.
Safety and Health is made up of three Inspectorates, the Mines Inspectorate, the
Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate and the Explosives Inspectorate, where health
and safety standards are set and monitored within the mining, petroleum and gas
and explosives industries.
The Mines Inspectorate carries out a program of both structured and unannounced
inspections and audits where the results play a vital role in detecting and
correcting substandard systems of work, conditions or practices with the aim
being to improve on-site health and safety. Running concurrently is the role of
health surveillance, which is also crucial in ensuring the risks and hazards
associated with the industry are minimised for mine employees and their
families.
Simulated mine emergency exercises, sponsored by the Department of Mining and Energy, are carried out annually to identify improved
processes for dealing with major mine disasters and serious accidents.
The Mines Inspectorate stays in touch with the latest developments in health and
safety and participates with DME’s research organisation, Simtars, in national
and international research initiatives.
